Frequently Asked Questions
- No, for travel to places in Federal Iraq a visa from Iraq is required as well. Its an e-visa, and the application can be made online. However, there is no official border between Kurdistan and Federal Iraq, only checkpoints. Travellers who entered over land from Turkey with only a Kurdistan visa often crossed the checkpoints to Mosul without any problem. But technically they are then illegally in Iraq, and passage can’t be guaranteed.
Yes, for tourists it is allowed, but not for locals
Yes, this is no problem at all. You can use western style clothing. Only for visiting a mosk men need to have their knees covered and woman need to cover their whole body and hair.
Almost all payments in Iraq are done with cash. ATM machines are available. But some international banks have a policy that prohibits payments to Iraq, and you could even loose your card if you even try. So better check with your bank if transfers to Iraq are allowed. It is best to take sufficient chash for your stay with you, and use the ATM only if really nevessary.
From the arrival terminal to the exit hall there is a free bus service that operates every few minutes. From the exit hall the only way to get to the city is with airport taxi or private car. The airport taxis are expensive and start at $25 for the shortest trip to the city. I can pick you up with my car, even at night, for $20.
